Our DNA

Duocean specializes in underwater whale and dolphin watching, which reduces the impact on the animals that "swimming with cetaceans" involves. As in land safari, passive observation allows for the least possible disturbance of the cetaceans. Thanks to the passivity of the group, we give the animals the freedom to choose when, how and how long the encounter will take place.

The "duo" supervision is essential for your safety and the well-being of the animals: the captains are experienced in searching for marine mammals and the state-certified aquatic guides have developed the sensitivity and know-how necessary for unforgettable encounters with the animals.

Passive observation
Scientific approach

Following the meeting with Fabienne Delfour and Olivier Adam, researchers specializing in cetaceans, Manu gave a scientific dimension to his outings, by collaborating with them for studies on cetaceans. Duocean notably provided video images for a scientific article by Anjara Saloma, CETAMADA; a conference on the behavior of cetaceans in the presence of humans in the natural environment at the ethological laboratory in Paris Sorbonne (LEEC); participated in the CERECAR project on ethology and bioacoustics on dolphins, collaborated with the brigade quiétude for the study on the disturbance of whales by "swimmers"; collected faeces to study stress in dolphins for Fabienne Delfour.

The founder

Manu was the first diving instructor in Reunion Island to specialize in 2012 in approaching cetaceans in the water. In 2014, he filed the protocol for Passive Observation of Cetaceans with the INPI, created with the help of scientists, in order to disturb the animals as little as possible in their evolutions. Respect for animals is part of our DNA! We offer an encounter with the animals and it is always they who choose whether or not to do the last few meters.

I am driven by the desire to pass on the knowledge I have acquired to participants and to introduce cetaceans to an aware and informed public, in order to respect the tranquility of the animals for a controlled tourist impact.

The media

Duocean is a committed service provider that wants to share knowledge with the public in order to raise awareness about protecting the marine environment. To promote passive observation as a sustainable activity, Manu participates in TV and radio shows, articles and posts on social networks. He has participated in several TF1 news programs, Le Monde de Jamy on France 3, Echappées belles on France 5, Les Belges du Bout du Monde on RTBF, the Antenne Réunion news program but also France Culture, Géo, Science et vie junior, Ouest France, Paris Match, Maison et Jardin. Welcoming many influencers including Hugo Hebbe, Bruno Maltor, le mec au chapeau 974, Natalia Trips ...
