Our DNA

Duocean specializes in underwater whale and dolphin watching , minimizing the impact on the animals that "swimming with cetaceans" entails. Similar to land safaris, passive observation allows us to disturb the cetaceans as little as possible. Thanks to the group's passivity, we allow the animals to choose when, how, and for how long the encounter will take place.

The "duo" supervision is essential for your safety and the well-being of the animals : the captains are experienced in searching for marine mammals and the state-certified aquatic guides have developed the sensitivity and expertise necessary for unforgettable encounters with cetaceans.

Scientific approach

Following a meeting with Fabienne Delfour and Olivier Adam, cetacean researchers, Manu added a scientific dimension to his outings by collaborating with them on cetacean studies. Duocean notably provided video footage for a scientific article by Anjara Saloma, CETAMADA; a conference on cetacean behavior in the presence of humans in their natural environment at the ethological laboratory at Paris Sorbonne (LEEC); participated in the CERECAR project on dolphin ethology and bioacoustics ; collaborated with the Quiétude brigade on a study of whale disturbance by swimmers; and collected feces to study stress in dolphins for Fabienne Delfour.

The founder

Manu was the first diving instructor in Réunion to specialize in approaching cetaceans in the water in 2012. In 2014, he registered the Passive Cetacean Observation Protocol with the INPI (French National Institute of Industrial Property), created with the help of scientists, to minimize disturbance to the animals' natural movements. Respect for animals is part of our DNA! We offer an encounter with the animals, and they always choose whether or not to take the final steps.

My desire is to pass on the acquired knowledge to the participants and to present the cetaceans to a conscious and informed public , in order to respect the tranquility of the animals for a controlled tourist impact.
